Ms. Harvin-Shomala's Bio
Ms. Harvin-Shomala developed her passion for youth and education while working with at-risk youth at an alternative-to-incarceration program. She was also inspired by her mother, a former teacher, and her father, a retired sports writer for the New York Times. Ms. Shomala grew up reading, writing, playing the clarinet and participating in dance and drama classes in the village of Harlem, NY. She also attended New York City’s public schools and is a proud graduate of Brooklyn Tech and Howard University. While at Howard, she majored in journalism and wrote articles for her school newspaper and yearbook. Ms. Shomala has been teaching since 2015 and recently earned her Master’s Degree from the Hunter College School of Education. She loves the arts, reading, writing, traveling and dancing and looks forward to intellectually engaging her students, getting to know their families and supporting AFSE staff in any way she can.
