Ms. C's Biography

Andrea Cox first entered the field of education in 2013.  Her desire to become a teacher was sparked through a childhood game that she played with her cousins, referred to as “School”.  It was within that game that she often assumed the role of teacher using her chalkboard, chalk, and erasers.  Throughout her years in the NYCDOE, she taught students with disabilities in classroom environments ranging from ICT to SETSS.

Andrea attended Long Island University, where she acquired a dual Bachelor’s degree in General Education and English.  She then went on to earn a Master’s in Special Education, with a certificate in SWD: 7-12 ELA.  Over time, she developed a growth mindset, which stems from being pushed past her comfort zone in the classroom on several occasions.  A key part of her instructional practice involves providing a curriculum that is culturally relevant, pushes students to embrace multiple perspectives, and allows them to question what they learn as opposed to simply accepting whatever they learn at face value.  Moreover, she is a strong proponent of pushing students to develop their self-advocacy skills and providing the tools necessary to ensure their success academically and socially.

Her passion has motivated her to pursue and earn her school building and district leadership certificates from the CITE program at the College of St. Rose.  She hopes to one day utilize both licenses to support schools by providing meaningful and equitable resources to support all students regardless of learning levels and cultural backgrounds.
