Mr. R's Bio

Shawn Raeke has served as the Principal of AFSE since 2017. Driven by a strong commitment to achieve equitable outcomes for all students, he has worked exclusively in urban educational settings throughout his career.
 
Mr. Raeke began his career in education in Richmond, California, initially as a substitute teacher across grades K–12 before assuming a full-time position as a biology teacher at De Anza High School. During his four fulfilling years at De Anza, he also coached the school's basketball and golf programs.
 
Mr. Raeke then transitioned to Oakland Technical High School in Oakland, California. Over seven years as a teacher there, Mr. Raeke assumed a variety of leadership roles, including golf coach, director of the Summer Algebra Academy, and chair of both the Science Department and Technology Committee. This experience was instrumental in his move to administration. After earning an M.A. in Educational Leadership from California State University East Bay, he became an Assistant Principal at Oakland Tech.
 
Mr. Raeke relocated to New York City in 2013 and joined AFSE in 2015, where he served as an Assistant Principal for two years before assuming the role of Principal. He holds a B.A. in biology from the University of Virginia and is a graduate of Plymouth North High School in Massachusetts.
