AFSE Gives Back

Dear AFSE students and colleagues:

The PTA thought it might be nice to bring the students, families, and staff together in community service. An upcoming event provides this opportunity. All AFSE students, their parents, and AFSE teachers & staff are invited to sign up to volunteer together at the Open Arms Resource Fair at The SHED (Hudson Yards) on Saturday December 16.

Throughout New York City, there are over 90,000 individuals living in temporary housing (shelters) - almost a third of whom are school-aged children. This number grows daily, and we recognize that the need in our city is deep and ongoing. In order to support our newest New Yorkers and all families in temporary housing, The Shed has partnered with the NYC Department of Education Manhattan Response Team to plan and host quarterly resource fairs, connecting thousands of individuals to dozens of organizations who provide vital resources for families living in shelters. The fair provides food assistance programs, immigration services, health insurance registration, vaccinations, dental screenings, and free eyeglasses. We need volunteers to help with crowd management, food service, giveaways, and minding children at an art table while their parents engage in conversation.  Spanish speakers are especially sought, but all volunteers are welcomed.

Please sign up here for a 3 hour shift to volunteer together on Saturday. Answer the last question AFSE so we can get a count of how many tshirts to order (for students: AFSE tshirt design contest rules will be sent separately) for all participants. We will provide snacks and will try to get a photo of as many of us together as we can.

We hope to bring the AFSE community together and hope you will join. The Shed needs us to reply to the volunteer sign up by NOV 17. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].
